Acupuncture is the insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points on the body, stimulating the energy or "qi" to help the body heal itself.
In studies conducted on both humans and dogs, acupuncture was found to be beneficial in cases where analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications had been ineffective or had demonstrated side effects and in cases where surgery was not recommended. For example, many practitioners are pleased with the results of acupuncture in treating arthritis in both humans and canines.
Positive Biological Effects
- Changes in brain chemistry sensation and involuntary body functions
- Regulating body temperature, blood pressure and blood flow
- Activating opioid systems, causing pain reducing
- Improving conduction of electromagnetic signals, stimulating the release of pain-killing biochemicals
Each treatment session lasts 30-45 minutes. During that time, the acupuncturist will go over the patient and determine which points would be most beneficial, and then inserts needles. After the needles are in place, the patient rests comfortably for about 20 minutes, at which time the needles are extracted. The acupuncture points vary from patient to patient and even from session to session depending on the patient's particular needs.
At VOSM, acupuncture is done either alone or in a package with cold laser therapy, massage, range of motion exercises and electromagnetic field therapy.
