With the advent of higher resolution probes, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound in small animals is becoming a more common and welcomed tool in the world of sports medicine, soft tissue injury and rehabilitation.

Dr. Debra Canapp, VOSM's owner and Medical Director, is a highly-trained ultrasonographer and performs thousands of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasounds each year.

She is among a few practitioners in the nation who have gained enough experience to excel in musculoskeletal ultrasound and provide an accurate diagnosis based on properly analyzing imaging.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound can distinguish between disruption of the tendons, core lesions, older injuries with scar tissue or calcification, or tenosynovitis.

Regenerative medicine therapies, such as stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma, can also be introduced most precisely via ultrasound-guided injection.

Advantages To Using Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

  • Does not require anesthesia
  • Lower cost than MRI (easier, more frequent rechecks)
  • Able to visualize soft tissues in movement

Commonly Treated Areas

  • Shoulder
  • Flexor Carpi Ulnaris (elbow)
  • Iliopsoas (groin)
  • Stifle (knee)
  • Achilles Tendon

Joint Disease - Indications On Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

  • Joint effusion
  • Thickening of the joint capsule
  • Cartilage defects
  • Bone destruction
  • Bone inflammation
