Cougar the Sea Turtle Visits VOSM

Monday June 2, 2014

On Monday, June 2, VOSM was honored to have the team from the National Aquarium in Baltimore come to us for arthroscopy on a Kemps Ridley sea turtle! "Cougar" the turtle was stranded in Massachusetts in mid-November, stabilized at the New England Aquarium sea turtle rescue center, and transferred to the National Aquarium a few days later. Dr. Kat Hadfield and her team from the National Aquarium teamed up with Dr. Sherman Canapp and the team at VOSM to determine the cause of Cougar's shoulder lesions by using arthroscopy, and cleaning out its shoulders. We hope that our treatments give Cougar a greater chance of returning to the wild. The procedure went very well and Cougar is back in its enclosure.
